Beginner’s Greek by James Collins: Peter, though, is the catalyst for this novel, and his struggle to do the right thing and behave the correct way often gets in the way of his own happiness. When James Collins is moving the novel through Peter’s actions and frustrations, the romantic comedy skips along its merry path. For the most part, Beginner’s Greek is an enjoyable romp of the heart and mind. It’s not completely believable, but that’s not necessary. It’s about love, true love, and how it can overcome all obstacles. That’s what we all want to believe in. Right? Well, at least it’s true in Beginner’s Greek and we should enjoy it while we can.
The Clearing by Tim Gautreaux: The Clearing is a tour de force for a new voice in American literature. Tim Gautreaux has written a novel that not only deals with the big ideas, but also with the little, yet important, things that make up human life. The Fall by Simon Mawer: Simon Mawer has given us a good novel, just not a great one. It can be electrifying and dizzying at one point and then detached and mired in its characters’ own lack of inertia the next. A more even novel would have been received better, but The Fall is still an enjoyable read that will leave you guessing the truth until the very end.
December 6 by Martin Cruz Smith: December 6 is a novel that succeeds on many levels. It’s an education into the mindset and culture of pre-war Japan. It’s an indictment of those beating the drums of war behind their own self-righteousness. Best of all, it’s a great story, and the description of Harry’s predicament is peeled back layer by layer, and by the end we’ve come to understand and sympathize with him completely. There’s a bit of Harry in all of us, trying to do the right thing while taking advantage of the situation at the same time. Read more...

Too often, there’s a conception of literature as something dusty and inactive. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The great books feature tons of examples of strong characters doing dramatic and compelling things, and this is true from any perspective, even that of the sportsman who isn’t accustomed to being drawn in by literature. A good example of this is the proliferation of big game fishing in classical books.
The most obvious example might be Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick”. In this novel, an old sailor named Ahab becomes obsessed with the great white whale that took his leg in a previous encounter. Despite that he has both a wife and child, he has no desire in the world other than to find and kill Moby Dick.
Throughout the novel, the futility and hardship of Ahab’s quest becomes more and more apparent. Soon, one realizes that an enterprise like fishing, far from being relaxing, can be a serious undertaking that can even claim one’s life. The crew finds themselves in increasing peril as Ahab refuses to abandon his pursuit, and it’s a breathtaking ride all around. Read more...

Have you ever seen the popular television show “The Dog Whisperer”? It highlights a man who loves dogs, and has a unique ability to communicate with them, and train them as well. The book “The Man Who Listens to Horses” offers a similar story, about a man who is able to train and communicate with horses. Written by Monty Roberts, it showcases the internal workings of a horse’s mind. In this article I will be offering my humble opinion on this remarkable book, and offer what I think are some of the highlights that I think other readers might enjoy.
