I love to buy new things. That feeling you get when you finally make the decision to buy this, and you are holding it in your arms, and you can’t wait to get home and start using it. Especially if this new thing is a computer, and you haven’t bought a new computer in a year or two. That makes your new one seem incredibly fast. The Internet seems brand new again, and all your favorite sites seem to load at lightening speed. It’s truly a great feeling.
But then something happens. Of course, a share of it is due to ever growing technology, and web sites developing better content that takes faster and faster processors to handle, as well as more memory, but something else can happen as well. Over time, computers are liable to slow down, even when visiting the constant web sites over and over. Many people assume that this is just par for the course, and factors into the choice to purchase a new computer. But does it really have to be that way? Read more...

There are many problems that can happen to your computer and make things appear to be less adroit and quick as they used to be. When you buy a new computer, and take it out of the box, the speed with which you can zip through all your tasks can seem amazing, especially if you only buy a new machine every couple of years or so. There is something called processor speed creep which many people feel is an inevitable consequence of using the same computer for a long time. The truth is, it doesn’t have to be that way.
There are more than a few reasons why your mainframe may be slowing down. Naturally the more programs you have running at once, the slower you will be able to work. For example if you have a graphics program open, a tape editing program open, and are video talking on Skype all at the identical time, chances are that unless you have a drastically quicker central processing unit than most off the ledge computers, you’re going to see a slowdown. There is a revolution happening around the world today. It started several years ago, and will continue to grow and change and shape the way we view society. This age, known as the information age, will be forever remembered by historians as one of the major shifts in the way humans live on this planet. With the massive growth of the Internet, and the many ways that people can share information, this is a great time to be alive on this wonderful planet.
The last main similar move in the social order that had this much effect on people was the development of agriculture. Before the development of crop growing, men and women had to hunt for food, and continuously be moving around. If they stayed in one place, they would rapidly die. Individuals lived in bands of fifty people or so, and the division of work was simply divided between men and women.
Then when cultivation was invented, folks could remain in one place. For many generations. The separation of labor became less defined by gender. Women could till just as well as men. And one other thing emerged with the skill to till the land. The capability to accrue resources. The more farm land you controlled, the wealthier you became. And the wealthier you became the more farmland you could control. This was plainly not possible in the hunter gatherer culture. Read more...

With the massive increase in speed and connection to the Internet, there are more and more sites popping up all over the place. Recent estimates put the figure as high as one million web pages being created per day. And recent surveys indicate that many people are beginning to expect Internet access as a basic human right. But just with any other good thing that comes along, there are dangers as well.
One of the major risks in connecting to the Internet is that you reveal yourself to threats in the fashion of spyware, adware, and other mean software. These can be difficult to perceive, and can have a negative outcome on your computer’s conduct, which in turn will directly have an effect on your Internet experience, so it’s influential to be able to become aware of when you’ve downloaded some kind of spyware or adware program.
The first thing to pay awareness to is how long it takes your computer to do the same tasks over and over. Seeing as it is doing the same thing, it shouldn’t take longer as time goes on. If you are like over ninety percent of Internet users today, you have spyware on your computer. Recent studies show that almost nine out of ten people have spyware in some form on their computer. However, not all spyware is bad and most people are surprised to find out that spyware isn’t even illegal. In some cases it can even be extremely helpful. In some cases it is a net benefit, even to those who unwillingly download it.
A valuable and positive use for spyware is for parents to monitor their children when they are online. Various kinds of information can easily be recorded by these programs, including web sites visited, and actual words typed on the keyboard. These are also known as keylogger programs. If you are worried about your son or daughter visiting a dangerous site, then this would be extremely beneficial. For example, you could monitor what is being typed in various Internet chat conversations.
Another positive use for spyware is in offices on either a dedicated machine or shared machines. Of course, while you’re at work, you’re supposed to be working, and not wasting valuable time goofing off on the Internet. With the economy as tough as it is, it makes sense that companies would like to squeeze every valuable cent they can out of their employees. Read more...

Because you are reading this, there is a high probability you are online. And since you are connected to the Internet, you are vulnerable to something called spyware. Many people are familiar with the term, and the need to protect against it, but that’s where it ends. In this article I’ll describe how it works, and how to defend against it, so you can keep your data private, the way it should be.
The general description of spyware is any software that gets installed on your computer for the purposes of secretly collecting information. Many different kinds of spyware exist for many different purposes and reasons. Basically, they all involve stealing your personal information that you would rather keep secret. Spyware can quickly slow your computer down to a crawl, and sometimes make connecting to the Internet impossible.
One particular application of spyware is a keylogger program. These software programs are designed to record every thing you type. Anonymous third parties can use them, but also parents and bosses can use them if they want to monitor exactly what is being typed on a particular computer. One bad way people can use a keylogger program is to steal your passwords or other sensitive information, like your credit card numbers, or your social security numbers. Read more...
